Music

Music at Colston’s is vibrant, creative and inclusive. Our aim is to encourage creativity and to develop confidence and self-esteem through a variety of performance opportunities.

In the Sixth Form we offer the BTEC Music qualification.  This course provide our pupils with the flexibility to explore a range of areas, be it composition, musical theory, preformance or production.

Our pupils are fully immersed in this creative subject and are encouraged to participate fully, from performing in concerts to singing as part of the annual House competition. Regardless of the activity, the emphasis is on the enjoyment of creating music, both as a soloist and in a group.

Approximately a third of our pupils engage in individual instrumental music lessons, learning a variety of contemporary and classical instruments taught by our team of specialist peripatetic teachers. Our team of 20 staff all perform locally and instil a passion for music, engaging pupils across the whole school. Pupils have the choice of taking graded examinations with a variety of established music boards or learning an instrument purely for enjoyment.

Concerts are regularly scheduled in the school calendar and musicians from the school frequently perform within the local community. Singing at Charter Day in Bristol Cathedral is a prestigious annual event and one which involves all vocalists within the school, whilst the Bristol Eisteddfod offers all performers an opportunity to compete against pupils from other independent schools. Whilst performing is at the very heart of the school, we also believe in enhancing pupils’ musical experience by offering trips to local concert venues and theatres throughout the year.

The Chatterton Hall, a 210-seat concert hall, is equipped with retractable seating, a brand-new grand piano and an electronic organ. Alongside this are well-equipped teaching and practice rooms and a band room. Our music classroomis furnished with PCs, Macs and keyboards.

A diverse programme of musical clubs runs throughout the year. With the aim of engaging pupils of all abilities and interests, our music clubs include: Rock School, Concert Band, Contemporary Singing, Orchestra, Beats and Pieces, Song Writing group & Musical Theatre Club. With so much on offer, there really is something for everyone.
