The vibrant, forward-thinking English Department at Colston’s provides pupils with an exciting and creative curriculum that engages them with a wide range of language and literature texts. We offer courses in both English Literature and English Language at A-Level in order to appeal to our pupils’ different interests and aptitudes.
Our English Literature pupils will read texts from different historical periods and cultures. They will study literary theory and learn how it can illuminate the study of a range of texts. They will also have the opportunity to produce coursework that explores aspects of key texts in greater depth.
At A-Level, we have strong links with Bristol University, who have created bespoke classes delivered by PhD pupils and lecturers on subjects from Arthurian literature to Keats and Browning.
Within the department, teachers have written A-Level study guides on major writers, and have published in literary journals, keeping up-to-date with current academic research. We support pupils who wish to study for the EPQ and those who wish to apply to Oxbridge by offering individual tutorials. Our A-Level results are consistently excellent and many of our pupils further their studies at top Russell Group universities.
Our pupils communicate effectively not only in writing, but orally, taking part in discussion and debate, and delivering presentations to their peers. Indeed, their articulacy is frequently commended by university admissions tutors.
Our pupils value the support they are given by their dedicated teachers and they benefit from the passion we feel for the subject. We encourage our pupils to have high aspirations; we aim to engender an enthusiasm for language and literature and equip them with the skills they will need to fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions.
