Mathematics

Led by a team of highly qualified specialist mathematicians, the department aims to engage pupils of all abilities: to inspire and challenge them to succeed at the highest level, whilst creating a secure environment where opinions and ideas are valued and respected.

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand the world around them. This includes problem-solving, number skills, abstract thinking and logic to name but a few.

Mathematics is all around us, in all we do. It is the building block for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices, architecture (ancient and modern), art, medicine, finance, engineering and even sports. We aim to develop confident mathematicians who are able to engage in the real world.

We believe that every child should achieve their potential in mathematics through a diverse and engaging curriculum, stimulating their desire to learn and explore. Our pupils participate enthusiastically in a variety of activities: UK Maths Challenges, the International Olympiad and Kangaroo Challenges, educational visits, STEM days, university master classes, puzzle afternoons and a variety of mathematical clubs.

Our curriculum is carefully constructed in order to build the foundations upon which future work is developed. In Years 7-11 pupils are taught in sets tailored to their ability and speed of learning. Pupils regularly move within these sets as their needs change.

Mathematics continues to be one of the most popular subjects in the school for A-Level. The enthusiasm for our subject is reflected in our excellent examination results. Many pupils go on to use mathematics at degree level: in engineering, architecture, physics, finance and economics, mathematics and natural sciences at Cambridge University.
